Children and Adolescents Surviving Cancer: Psychosocial Health, Quality of Life and Social Support

Mary-Elizabeth Bradley Eilertsen Sept’ 78by: Mary-Elizabeth Bradley Eilertsen Sept’ 78

Congratulations to Mary-Elizabeth who recently completed a doctoral thesis at NTNU – Trondheim, Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2111.The following are excerpts from this thesis that will be of special interest to our readers.

Background: Childhood cancer involves a crisis for the child and their family where they face many challenges to achieve normality after diagnosis, even after successful treatment. In 1985, a professional collaboration model (PCM) was developed at the Department of Pediatrics, St. Olavs University Hospital, Trondheim where the goal was to offer optimal follow-up care to  children with cancer and their families.

In Norway, approximately 120-150 children and adolescents under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer each year (annual incidence 16.2/100,000) and approximately 40 children die yearly of their cancer illness (Cancer Registry 2009). The most common type of malignancy in children is leukaemia, accounting for approximately 1/3 of childhood cancers. The second most frequent malignancy in children is tumours of the central nervous system.

A LONG TIME AGO

By Marjorie (Espley) Wilson – Class 1935
Marjorie wrote this article for our 2006 newsletter. She has just celebeated her 99th birthday and remains active.

Student Residences / Homes

  • There were “5” scattered around V.G.H. – from Broadway to 12th Ave. and Heather/Laurel to 10th Ave… Four were shacky. The “Old Home” was new and up to date, and there were two to a room. Each home had a matron who kept an eagle eye on every activity! After our annual holiday or following night shift, we often found we had a different room /home and roommate.
  • There was no personal interest shown toward us. We did not have any planned off duty activities – a big adjustment for out of town students. Most students did not have money as it was “The Dirty Thirties”.
  • One Christmas an out of town probie was visiting with friends of her family. The host phoned Miss Fairley and asked if they could keep her out an extra half hour and Miss Fairley replied “CERTAINLY NOT”!

THE BEGINNING
What a process I remember it clear

VGH held standards high
And so we were accepted with pride,
Though some were denied….

Margaret was born in Toronto and moved to Vancouver as a young child. She attended school in Cranbrook, BC and entered VGH in 1930 and her first residence was West House where she shared a five- person dormitroy, later moved to Ellis House and then to the “Old Home”. After graduation in 1933 she worked at VGH and shared a room in a boarding house near the hospital- had a gas plate and a box ouside the window for a refrigerator. At that time VGH paid the highest wages for graduate nurses in Candada – $54/month + board and laundry. In 1935, she moved to Port Alice as jobs were at a premium during the Depression of the 1930s.
